Protect Your Vision During AMD Awareness Month
Taking Preventative Steps for Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss among older Americans, but thanks to major medical advances over the past decade, AMD is more manageable than ever before. During AMD Awareness Month this February, Hawaiian Eye Center is encouraging everyone to take an important step toward protecting their eyesight: scheduling a comprehensive eye exam.
AMD impacts the macula, the part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision used for reading, driving, and recognizing faces. While the condition often develops without noticeable symptoms in its initial stages, early detection can make a critical difference in preserving vision.
“Many patients are surprised to learn how far AMD treatments have come,” says Dr. Steven Rhee of Hawaiian Eye Center. “Today’s therapies can significantly slow disease progression and help people maintain independence and quality of life — but only if the condition is caught early.”
The American Academy of Ophthalmology emphasizes that recent treatment advances have transformed AMD care, allowing patients to better manage the disease and save their vision. Regular eye exams remain a critical step in eye care, especially for adults over age 60 or those with a family history of AMD.
Hawaiian Eye Center encourages everyone – from kupuna and their families – to use AMD Awareness Month as a reminder to prioritize eye health.
If you or a loved one is experiencing changes in vision — or if it has been a while since your last eye exam — now is the time to schedule an appointment. Early detection can help protect the vision you rely on every day.
