Eye Safety Tips to Prevent Injuries On the Job
Taking Precautions for Workplace Eye Wellness Month
Workplace-related eye injuries impact over 20,000 Americans every year – accidents that can cause permanent eye damage or even blindness.
March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month, an annual observance to bring attention to eye health and safety in the workplace. As many workplaces rely on special equipment or long-term screen use, eye protection and safety protocols are more important than ever to protect your eyes.
“Without warning, a workplace eye injury can be life-altering for you, but proper prevention and planning can make a difference,” says Dr. Steven Rhee of Hawaiian Eye Center. “Regardless of what industry you work in, these risks can be mitigated.”
Hawaiian Eye Center recommends the following tips for Workplace Eye Wellness:
- Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds to reduce digital eye strain.
- Adjust Ergonomics: Position your computer screen 18 to 25 inches away, with the top of the screen at or just below eye level.
- Wear Safety Eyewear: Use appropriate protective eyewear (goggles, shields) in industrial or hazardous settings, which can prevent up to 90% of injuries
- Reduce Digital Strain: Adjust screen brightness, use anti-glare filters, and blink frequently to keep eyes moist.
- Lighting and Environment: Ensure proper lighting, avoid harsh glare, and consider using a humidifier to combat dry eyes.
Hawaiian Eye Center encourages everyone – from employees to employers – to take the necessary precautions to prevent a workplace eye injury. Routine eye exams can also help address injuries or eye issues early.
