Keiki Safety for Halloween
Keeping Your Eyes Safe for Halloween Safety Month
(Honolulu, HI) October 10, 2025 — As Halloween approaches, Hawaiian Eye Center is urging families across Hawai‘i to steer clear of costumes and eyewear that could lead to a real-life horror story — permanent vision loss.
While keeping the fun of Halloween costumes, Hawaiian Eye Center wants to warn of the potential dangers of decorative lenses. These products are often sold illegally online, in beauty supply stores, or at pop-up Halloween shops, and may not be sterile or properly fitted. Wearing them without a prescription and proper guidance from an eye care professional can result in serious eye complications, including painful infections, corneal scratches, and even blindness.
“We want to make sure our patients and their ‘ohana enjoy a safe and enjoyable Halloween,” says Dr. Steven Rhee, D.O., Medical Director for Hawaiian Eye Center. “That means avoiding any costume accessory — especially contact lenses — that could put your eye health at risk.”
Hawai‘i residents are encouraged to only use FDA-approved contact lenses obtained with a valid prescription from a licensed eye care provider. While dressing up can be fun, no costume is worth risking your sight.
Tips for Protecting Your Vision This Halloween:
- Never buy costume contact lenses without a prescription.
- Don’t share lenses with others.
- Avoid purchasing lenses from street vendors, salons, or online shops that don’t require a prescription.
- Avoid wearing masks or eyewear that could potentially injure your eyes (for example, in the event of a fall).
- If you experience redness, pain, or blurred vision, remove the lenses immediately and seek medical help.
