Celebrating the 4th of July Holiday Safely
June is National Fireworks Safety Month
(Honolulu, HI) July 1, 2025 — From keiki to kupuna, 4th of July celebrations are a time for family, friends, and holiday fun. But few things are more important than your eye safety – especially when handling or watching fireworks.
June is National Fireworks Safety Month. Nationwide, the majority of fireworks injuries are reported between June 16 through July 16. “A fun evening celebration with your loved ones can turn dangerous, quickly – especially for our eyes,” says Dr. Steven Rhee, D.O., of Hawaiian Eye Center. “We want families everywhere to enjoy the holiday – while not putting their health or vision at risk.”
Below are some handling practices and safe behavior that can help prevent injuries and fires:
- Choose to attend professional, public displays instead of purchasing and lighting your own.
- If lighting fireworks, follow safety protocol: keep a distance from others, and have water nearby.
- NEVER point or throw fireworks at anyone.
- DO NOT allow children to handle fireworks; teens should be closely accompanied by an adult.
- NEVER try to relight fireworks that didn’t ignite properly.
- Soak all fireworks and debris in water before disposal.
- Do not use fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
At Hawaiian Eye Center, your eye health is our priority. Schedule an eye exam, get your questions answered, or treat eye conditions at one of our three Oahu locations.
