This Holiday Season, Give Your Keiki the Gift of Safety
December is Safe Toys and Celebrations Month
(Honolulu, Hawaii) December 12, 2024 – Each year, hundreds of children’s eye injuries are caused by toys. For December’s Safe Toys and Celebration Month, Hawaiian Eye Center advises safety while choosing holiday gifts for your keiki this season.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology advises parents to be cautious when choosing holiday gifts for young people. Parents and gift-givers should avoid toys that launch projectiles, such as crossbows and BB guns. When holiday shopping this year, keep these guidelines in mind to prevent toy-related eye injuries:
· Avoid fragile toys prone to shattering into small, hazardous pieces.
· Look for the “ASTM” label on toys, signifying certification by the American Society for Testing and Materials and adherence to national safety standards.
· Thoroughly inspect toys for secure and durable construction.
· Read labels and warnings diligently to steer clear of potentially hazardous products.
· Avoid purchasing toys that propel projectiles
· Ensure the toy aligns with the recipient’s age and developmental stage
· Refrain from buying toys with sharp edges, spikes, or rigid rods.
· When necessary, provide appropriate eye protection while the recipient uses the gift (especially applicable to sports toys, scientific or artistic crafts).
“We hope your gift-giving this season is joyous, festive, and most importantly, safe,” says Dr. Steven Rhee, D.O., of Hawaiian of Eye Center. “From all of us at Hawaiian Eye Center, we wish you a happy and healthy holiday and New Year with your family and loved ones.”
